Both shocking and amusing - and you thought the city was dangerous now! This talk comes to us from the Sun Jester group of historian/educators. They last entertained us in March last year with Towse Harrison’s “Science and Superstition – Medicine in the Roman Empire” Graham is a freelance Educator and historian. Date - 26 Jan 2024 Time - 20:00 (Doors open 19:30) Location - Weston Turville Village Hall Title - "The Rothschilds and the Vale of Aylesbury" Speaker – Adam Smith Entrance - £2 members, £3 visitors In the 19th Century the Rothschild family built seven country houses in the Vale of Aylesbury. Some of these are well known, like Waddesdon, others are almost forgotten, like Aston Clinton, but each was the centre of an agricultural estate and housed important collections. The unusual (for England) pattern of inheritance which the Rothschild family followed enabled different members of the family to have the funds necessary for this. The Rothschilds influence is still visible in Weston Turville. Adam, who lives in Tring, is a lecturer and former museum curator specialising in the history of English country houses and estates.
